The Top-Down Method for Cleaning Your Appliance Countertop
The smartest way to clean your appliance countertop is to work top to bottom and plan before you touch a thing. The counter where your appliances live can’t be wiped every day, so give it one proper clean each week. Before you start, stand and look at the area: decide what to clean first, what to move, and where you’ll set things down — you’ll need a clear patch of counter to park appliances while you work. Start high, wiping upper cabinets and the wall first, so falling dust doesn’t force you to re-clean below. Move the light appliances aside and, for a heavy one like an OTG, clean it in place — front, back, top and bottom. A microfibre cloth and a little soapy water lift most dirt without scrubbing. Finally, keep appliances covered so dust barely settles and you’re not re-cleaning them again and again. Do this in short 15–20 minute bursts through the year and you’ll never need special festival cleaning.

Frequently asked questions
How do I clean the countertop where I keep my kitchen appliances?
Clean it once a week by removing appliances one by one, wiping the exposed area, then replacing them. Because this zone can't be wiped daily, a weekly pass keeps dust from building up behind and under the machines.
Should I clean my kitchen from the top or the bottom first?
Always start from the top. Clean upper cabinets and the upper wall first, so any dust that falls lands on the lower areas you haven't cleaned yet — otherwise you'll have to wipe the bottom twice.
How do I clean a heavy appliance I can't easily move?
Clean it in place. For a heavy appliance like an OTG, wipe the front, back, top and bottom without lifting it. Move only the smaller, lighter appliances to a clear space nearby.
Why should I cover my kitchen appliances?
Covering appliances keeps dust from settling on them, so they stay protected and don't get dirty again and again. This saves both the time and energy you'd otherwise spend re-cleaning them.
Do I need to scrub every spot to get the counter clean?
No. A little soapy water and a microfibre cloth lift most dirt quickly, so you rarely need to scrub. Clearing the items off first also lets you see exactly where the dirt is.
